Electric vehicle charging points: Equipment for the electrical installer

May 30, 2023.

Electrical vehicle (EV) and pluggable hybrid vehicles (PHEV) are high-power equipment; as such, they must be installed by licensed electricians using approved measurement and analysis tools. PROMAX supplies all the measurement instruments for those electricians in charge of the deployment and servicing of the electric vehicle charging circuits.

KITS FOR THE ELECTRICAL VEHICLES INSTALLER

Charging points must be installed by an licensed electrician

Only the licensed electricians must install charging points.
Only the licensed electricians must install charging points and undertake the jobs to adapt the existing electrical infrastructure. A poor execution may impact in the safety.

Charging the EV in private or public stations or in charging facilities is an energy-intense process. Using slow, fast or rapid EV chargers does not really matter: The current consumption can reach up to 32 A.

Installing a charging point is not a simple DIY process. It is a task that must involve a licensed electrician because it includes, but it is not limited to the following:

  • Evaluating the current electrical infrastructure.
  • Adapting, if required, the electrical panels and the rest of the infrastructure.
  • Proteger contra sobrecargas o sobretensiones temporales/transitorias y cortocircuitos los circuitos de recarga.
  • Legalize and certify the electrical installation..
  • Undertake preventive maintenance tasks, specially for vehicle chargers located outdoors and/or in public places.

and last but not least, the installer must guarantee the both charging station is operating within specifications and the proper communication between the station and the vehicle.

All of this requires to be provided of measurement and analysis tools that go beyond a simple multimeter.

A good practice when installing a charging point for electrical vehicles is to oversize the installation. This means the electrical installation should be planned in such a way its capacity could hold a greater number of charging points than the initially planned.

This way, forthcoming charging points additions will not require increasing the capacity of the electrical infrastructure. This will help to save time, troubles and costs in the future.

Tools for the installer of electrical vehicles charging stations

The toolbox of an installer of electrical vehicles charging points must include, at least, measurement tools to undertake tests for the both sides of the installation: The electrical side and the car-charger communication side.

Electrical installations tester

A must-have tool to control the safety of the electrical circuits that supply energy to the vehicles charging points. The devices must check the proper operation of the differential switches and the circuit breakers in the electrical panels, as well as the proper performance of the TT (earth-earth) and TN (earth-neutral) systems.

PROMAX IC-600 multifunctional electrical installations tester. It performs all the required tests to verify the safety in TT and TN systems, including key tests to evaluate the electrical supply: Continuity, isolation, RCS, loop, line, voltage, frequency, earth impedance testing and phase sequence testing.

SINGLE-PHASE AND THREE-PHASE INSTALLATIONS TESTER

Charging station (EVSE) simulator

After installing or servicing a charging station, under no circumstances its operation should be checked using an actual vehicle because a faulty or improperly installed charging point may damage the batteries.

Instead, it is necessary to simulate the presence of the vehicle by means of a charging points tester that emulates the behavior of the batteries and evaluates the proper operation of all the charging statuses of the vehicle charging process.

Wattmeter clamps

The measurement clamps are not only safer (because they do not require to work with bare conductors) but they also can work with currents that largely exceed the measurement capabilities of most multimeters -reaching the kA- with no risk of damaging the instrument while taking measurements for a long period.

Current clamps and wattmeter clamps
PROMAX current clamps and wattmeter clamps allow to operate in domestic and industrial environments, or in balanced and unbalanced three-phase installations. Depending on the model, their measurement capabilities can reach up to 1500 VDC, 1000 VAC and 2000 A.
